Niál is interested in applying quantitative methods to support environmental decision-making. His PhD focuses on developing an optimisation tool for multi-functional forest management, which will help forest managers balance objectives like timber production, ecological protection, and enhancing forest resilience. Other topics he has worked on include spatially-explicit biomass estimation and modelling urban air pollution.
Niál's PhD is joint with the Sustainable Forestry Group at WSL under the supervision of Dr. Janine Schweier.
